...I am off to Algonquin with our Scouts next week!

1. Get the Kevlar canoes. Yup! Can't imagine schlepping one of those Grummans.
2. Train. I never get trained early enough but the dogs will get walked few more times this week.
3. Cardio training. (See above)We distribute the food and gear throughout the packs and have got it down to one tripping portages.
4. Skills training. We have limited ability to canoe and can't replicate the windy conditions so our Scouts are learning on the job their first time out. We go for the same number of days and do about 1/2 the distance. Except for a couple of days we are in the campsite by lunchtime. More time to fish, set up camp in the daytime and enjoy the place.
5. Team training. Never seems to be a big problem. Our largest crew is nine (three adults and six Scouts) and they do pretty well.
6. Test skills. They learn quickly.
7. Have a written duty roster. Never really had one.
8. Go to Quetico. The Boundary Waters (BWCA) are just plain crowded. Algonquin is crowded in some places but each each portage cuts the crowds by a factor of ten. We push the first day or two and don't see many folks after that.
9. If the advisers like coffee, take a spare stove. We take the coffee bags or a French press.
10. As an advisor, stand back and let the scouts run the show. Know when to bark and when to just wag your tail.
11. Keep the rules simple and clear so that you don't waste time picking nits with some budding lawyer. Well put!

If you are interested in Algonquin drop me a line.Clarke Greenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06847993208762191042noreply@blogger.com
